Why Wordless?

Oh the funny things kiddos say when they realise a picture book does not need words. “It can’t tell a story”, “nothing happens”, & “huh?” are a few I’ve heard in the classroom before. So, why read a wordless book?

Wordless equals freedom to talk about the possibilities using the pictures as prompts. Every time you open a wordless picture book you get to choose what happens. Your kiddo can create their own meaning.

Wordless equals non-confrontational for kiddos feeling pressure about their decoding abilities. It gifts the confidence to succeed because there are no rules & no mistakes. Perfect for struggling readers as they get to experience the joy of a book which in turn still propels them forward with their literacy skills.

Wordless equals meeting both the mood & energy levels for both you & your kiddo. No matter how tired you are, there is a way to engage with a book that has no words. If your kiddo is in a stinker of a mood it can keep their mind on the images & slowly pick them up as they relax.

A suggested list of stunners to try are available in our Freebie Membership - so take a look. Alternatively you can ask your friendly librarian or local bookshop owner for their recommendations.

So to summarise the greatness of wordless books, well actually, I have no words.
