Alphabet ispy
Feel free to buy specific phonics games but in all honesty there are some rich & easy to achieve alternatives we’re here to share with parents. Take a look below at your new go to game.
how to play
-
A keen pair of eyes.
-
It’s as simple as the version you know from childhood. With a slight tweak.
Take turns (or play free for all) looking out the window for letters of the alphabet to call out loud.
Begin with the letter A & see if you can get all the way to Z.
-
Many skills become stronger as kiddos start noticing where to look for particular letters within words. It’s especially exciting as they recognise words & letters within their natural surroundings that they once would pass by unaware.
Below are skills taken straight from the Australian Curriculum so you know playing this game is adding to your child’s at-school learning.
• Recognising & naming all upper- & lower-case letters (graphs)
• Associating the most common sound (phoneme) that each letter represents
-
Make it easier by giving clues to your kiddo about where to look or an upcoming sign.
Make it harder by requesting the word the letter was found within.
Get the whole car load of people involved in the game.
Make a point of explaining that certain words, & therefore certain letters, come up really often in a car journey e.g. EXIT, TURN, STOP.
